Title of talk: Bridging the Silence with Technologies and Possibilities.

Prof. Kwanchanok Yimtae, MD, FRCOT.

Abstract of talk
The hearing impairment is the second most common disabilities. Without the
assistive devices, the patient with severe hearing impairment or deafness lives his/her
life in silence. World Health Organization estimates that over 5% of the world’s
population (about 430 million people) have hearing disabilities. Most of them live in low-
or middle-income countries. Global shortage of ear experts and audiologists decrease
the accessibility to health care and opportunity to receive the higher education. Thanks
for the advances in mobile technology, many smartphone applications for ear and
hearing care launch into the market. Some could get the FDA approval for medical
devices, while some couldn’t. From the ear specialist’s point of view, this presentation
will discuss how the technology is able to bridge the gap and support the unmet need of
ear and hearing care.
